EKGs, Hearing Tests & Screenings
EKG & In-Office Health Screenings in the Bronx, NY
An EKG is a painless five-minute test that records your heart's electrical activity through stickers placed on your chest, arms and legs. It's used to check heart rhythm, look for signs of past or present heart strain, and clear people for surgery, sports or certain medications.
Who this is for
- Patients with palpitations, chest discomfort, dizziness or shortness of breath
- Adults with high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
- Athletes and workers whose clearance form asks for a heart test
- Anyone with a family history of heart disease or sudden cardiac death
- Patients starting a medication that can affect heart rhythm
What happens at the visit
Getting set up
You lie down and small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest, arms and legs. It doesn't hurt and nothing goes into your body.
The recording
You stay still and breathe normally for about ten seconds while the machine records. The whole thing takes about five minutes.
Your doctor reads it
Your physician reviews the tracing during your visit and tells you what it shows.
Next steps if something looks off
Depending on the result, your doctor may order bloodwork, recommend monitoring, adjust medication, or refer you to a cardiologist.
Other screenings in the same visit
Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, kidney and liver function, anemia and thyroid testing can be handled at the same appointment rather than at a separate lab.

Insurance and cost
An EKG ordered because of symptoms or a medical condition is typically covered by Medicaid and commercial plans. Tests done purely for employment or sports clearance may be handled differently.
We accept Medicaid and most managed Medicaid plans, along with many commercial plans. Coverage rules change often, so call (917) 801-0954 with your card in hand and our staff will confirm what your plan covers before your visit.
Self-pay patients are welcome. Ask our front desk what a visit will involve when you call so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions
- Does an EKG hurt?
- No. Electrodes are placed on the skin and nothing is injected. The most anyone notices is the sticker being removed.
- How long does it take?
- About five minutes, including setup.
- Do I need to do anything to prepare?
- No special preparation. Wear something easy to change out of and avoid heavy lotion on your chest that day.
- Can a normal EKG miss a heart problem?
- Yes. An EKG shows your heart at that moment, so intermittent problems can be missed. Your doctor may order additional testing if symptoms continue.
- Do I need a referral for an EKG?
- Not to be seen here — your NorthPoint physician can order and perform it at your visit if it's appropriate.
