Annual Physical

Annual Physical & Checkups in the Bronx, NY

An annual physical is a once-a-year head-to-toe checkup that looks for problems before you feel them — blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight and anything else that changes quietly. Most adults should have one every year, even when they feel completely fine.

Call (917) 801-0954

Who this is for

  • Adults who haven't had a full checkup in a year or more
  • Anyone with a family history of diabetes, heart disease or cancer
  • Patients who need labs done before starting or renewing a medication
  • People whose job, school or insurance plan asks for a yearly exam
  • Anyone who wants a baseline set of numbers to measure against next year

What happens at the visit

  1. Vitals and measurements

Blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen level, height and weight are recorded at the start so your doctor can compare them to previous years.

  2. Health history review

We go through your medications, past surgeries, allergies, family history and the habits that affect your health — sleep, alcohol, smoking, stress and work.

  3. The physical exam

Your doctor listens to your heart and lungs, checks your abdomen, skin, eyes, ears, throat, thyroid, lymph nodes, pulses and reflexes.

  4. Screening and labs

Bloodwork for cholesterol, blood sugar, kidney and liver function, and anemia. Depending on your age and history, your doctor may recommend an EKG, an HIV or hepatitis C test, or a referral for a mammogram or colonoscopy.

  5. Your plan for the year

You leave with your results explained in plain language, any vaccines you're due for, prescriptions renewed, and a follow-up date if you need one.

Ready when you are

Should you fast before your physical?

If your doctor plans to check cholesterol or blood sugar, it can help to come in without eating for eight to twelve hours beforehand. Water and your usual medications are fine.

Call ahead and ask when you book — our staff will tell you whether fasting applies to your visit so you're not surprised at the door.

What to bring

  • Photo ID and insurance card
  • All of your medications and supplements
  • Your vaccination record if you have one
  • Dates and results of past screenings — colonoscopy, mammogram, Pap test
  • A note of any symptom you've been ignoring

Insurance and cost

Most insurance plans, including Medicaid, cover a preventive annual visit. If your doctor treats a separate problem during the same visit, that portion may be billed differently.

We accept Medicaid and most managed Medicaid plans, along with many commercial plans. Coverage rules change often, so call (917) 801-0954 with your card in hand and our staff will confirm what your plan covers before your visit.

Self-pay patients are welcome. Ask our front desk what a visit will involve when you call so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an annual physical take?
Plan to be at the office for the exam, vitals and any lab draw. Call (917) 801-0954 and the front desk will tell you how much time to set aside.
Is my annual physical free with insurance?
Many plans cover a yearly preventive visit at no cost to you. Call (917) 801-0954 with your insurance card and we'll check your plan before you come in.
Do I need a physical if I feel healthy?
Yes — that's the best time to have one. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and early diabetes usually cause no symptoms at all.
Can I get my bloodwork done the same day?
In most cases yes, bloodwork is drawn during your visit rather than at a separate lab appointment.
How will I get my results?
Our office calls you with your results and your doctor explains what they mean and what, if anything, needs to change.
