Travel Clinic

Travel Clinic in the Bronx, NY

A travel visit is a single appointment before a trip where we review where you are going, what you may be exposed to, and which vaccines or prescriptions you should have first. It is easiest when you come in four to six weeks before you fly, though a late visit is still worth making.

Call (917) 801-0954

Who this is for

  • Anyone traveling to the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Asia or the Pacific
  • Families visiting relatives abroad, including children traveling with parents
  • Students and volunteers on study, mission or service trips
  • Workers traveling for an employer who requires documented vaccinations
  • Travelers with diabetes, asthma, HIV or another ongoing condition who need a plan while away

What happens at the visit

  1. Tell us where you are going

Bring your itinerary — countries, rural or city stays, dates, and whether you will be around farms, fresh water or remote areas. The advice depends on all of it.

  2. We review your vaccination history

Routine vaccines are checked first, because measles, tetanus and flu are the ones travelers most often need updated.

  3. Destination-specific recommendations

Your doctor goes through what is recommended for your trip, including hepatitis A and B, typhoid and other travel vaccinations available at the office.

  4. Prescriptions if you need them

Malaria prevention, travelers' diarrhea standby treatment and altitude sickness medication can be prescribed at the same visit and sent to your pharmacy.

  5. Written instructions to take with you

You leave with a record of what you received, what to take and when, and what symptoms should send you to a doctor while you are away or after you return.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I come in?
Four to six weeks before you travel is ideal, because some vaccines need more than one dose or take time to take effect. If your trip is sooner than that, come anyway — there is still useful protection available.
Do you give yellow fever vaccine?
Yellow fever vaccine can only be given at a designated yellow fever vaccination center. Call the office and our staff will tell you whether we can provide it or where to go.
Can I get malaria pills here?
Yes. If your destination has malaria risk, your doctor can prescribe preventive medication and explain when to start it, how long to take it, and how long to continue after you return.
Do you see children before travel?
We see adults and children. Call the office and our staff will tell you what we can handle at your child's age and when a specialist visit is more appropriate.
What if I get sick after I come back?
Call the office. Fever after travel is taken seriously — tell the front desk where you traveled and when you returned so your visit is scheduled appropriately.
