Hepatitis Care

Hepatitis B & C Testing and Care in the Bronx, NY

Hepatitis B and C are viruses that affect the liver and often cause no symptoms for years while quietly doing damage. A single blood test tells you where you stand — hepatitis B has a vaccine that prevents it, and hepatitis C can be cured for most people with a course of pills.

Who this is for

  • Every adult, at least once — a one-time hepatitis C test is recommended for all adults
  • Anyone born in, or with family from, a country where hepatitis B is common
  • People who have ever injected drugs, even once, even long ago
  • Anyone who received a blood transfusion or medical care in a setting with limited screening
  • People living with HIV, or starting PrEP
  • Anyone whose household member or partner has hepatitis B

What happens at the visit

  1. A blood test

Screening for hepatitis B and hepatitis C is a simple blood draw done at the office during a regular visit.

  2. Understanding your result

Your doctor explains what the result means in plain words — immune, never exposed, past infection, or current infection — because these tests confuse almost everyone at first.

  3. Prevention if you're not immune

If you're not protected against hepatitis B, the vaccine series is given here. There is no vaccine for hepatitis C, so prevention is about avoiding exposure.

  4. Follow-up testing if you're positive

Additional bloodwork measures how much virus is present and how your liver is doing, and imaging may be ordered.

  5. Treatment and referral

Hepatitis C is cured in most people with oral medication taken for a set number of weeks. Hepatitis B is managed long-term with monitoring and, for some patients, medication. Your doctor coordinates specialist care when it's needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can hepatitis C really be cured?
For most people, yes. Modern treatment is oral medication taken over a set number of weeks, with high cure rates and far fewer side effects than older therapies.
How is hepatitis B different from hepatitis C?
Hepatitis B has a vaccine that prevents it and is usually managed long-term rather than cured. Hepatitis C has no vaccine but can usually be cured with medication.
I feel fine. Why test?
Both viruses commonly cause no symptoms for years while affecting the liver. Testing is the only way to know.
Is the hepatitis B vaccine available here?
Yes, the vaccine series is given at the office and is also part of the vaccination review for immigration exams.
Will my family need testing?
For hepatitis B, household members and partners are usually tested and vaccinated. Your doctor will tell you who to bring in.
